Even about 30 years ago, it was very rare to see skin disorders such as Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, dermatitis, or atopy.  It was an understanding people had where the condition would get better once the baby starts to walk or talk.  However, now over 20% of the babies and children are suffering from this chronic skin disease and it can be refer as diseases of the 21st century.  There is currently no cure for this condition since the cause of atopic dermatitis is still unknown.  However, the disease seems to be result from combination of genetic (hereditary), environment, immune system, life style and habits.

Although symptoms may vary from person to person, the most common symptoms are dry, itchy, and red skin. Scratching and rubbing in response to itching irritates the skin and leads to the other common symptoms of eczema such as redness of the skin, swelling, cracking, "weeping" clear fluid, and finally, dryness, crusting and scaling.  In some severe cases, the patches may bubble up and ooze or be scaly which causes “lichenification”, thickening of the skin.  Typical affected skin areas include the folds of the arms, the back of the knees, wrists, face, and hands.

In most cases of eczema, Western medicine is only able to temporarily soothe the irritation with hazardous anti-inflammatory medicines or topical corticosteroids to alleviate symptoms, but do not improve the health of the skin.  Possible side effects of repeated or long-term use of topical corticosteroids include thinning of the skin, infections, growth suppression in children, and stretch marks on the skin.

While atopic dermatitis cannot be cured, most cases can be controlled with proper treatment with Acupuncture and Herbal medicine, which is to eliminate the pathology of the skin disease by treating the underline causes and alleviating the symptoms instead of just controlling or suppressing the symptoms.

The main difference between a child and an adult is the fact the children are constantly growing.  Growth is natural phenomena in kids which are in results of their current health conditions.  Therefore, the parents should always be concern with child’s health especially where they are going through the growth and development stages.

In the first two years of life after baby is born, the speed of physical growth is rapid and usually, the baby will grow almost twice the size.  This is considered the 1st major growth and development stage.  After this stage, the child will continue to grow about 5-6cm every year until they reach puberty.  Once the child reaches puberty, they will grow about 7-12cm within 1-2 years and this is consider 2nd major growth and development stage.  During this growing and development stages, it’s important for child to consume and intake proper foods and nutrients so child can grow healthy along normal growth patterns.   After the 2nd major growth and development stage, child will continue to grow 5cm or more within the next 3-4 years before the growth plate closes permanently.
